Off the Beaten Track


From the East and the North

Detailed directions from the M5 are below.  These give the quickest route, which is not the shortest.  The total driving time following this route from the M5 is about 1¼ hours.



From the M5 Junction 27 (Tiverton), take the A361 towards Barnstaple.


After 27 miles, turn right at a roundabout on to the A399 towards Ilfracombe.


After 12 miles, turn right at Blackmoor Gate on to the A39 towards Lynton.

Recommended route from M5 Junction 27

After 4 miles, just past Woody Bay Station and Moorlands Guest House on left, turn left at Martinhoe Cross towards Martinhoe.


After 0.8 miles, turn left at Martinhoe Common Cross towards Hunter’s Inn.


After 0.8 miles, go straight ahead at Mannacott Lane Head towards Hunter’s Inn.


After 0.5 miles, descending a 25% gradient with a hairpin bend, turn right at the National Trust sign marked “Private Road to Heddon’s Gate and Martinhoe Cleave”.


After 0.2 miles bear right at the sign to Heddon’s Gate.  The hotel is a further 0.1 miles.

Recommended route from A39

Alternative routes from the East

There is a couple of other routes from the east, which are more picturesque but are slower owing to having to negotiate large towns first.  These are from Taunton via the B3224 and from Bridgwater via the A39.

From the South and the West

From South Devon or Cornwall, you should navigate to Barnstaple, then follow the A39 towards Lynton and pick up the directions above from Blackmoor Gate.  When coming from the Exeter area, it normally easiest to come up the A396 or M5 to Tiverton, then to follow all the directions above.
